Bouncer's Dusky Fishing Reports

We have had a lot more luck with the fishing than with the computer lately.

In September we fished with Scott Nichols to try to finish his one year quest to catch the nine IGFA billfish species in that year, plus tagging all nine with TBF tags in the same time. We did it with 7 day to spare when we headed out into solid black storm skies and caught A fat 82 inch swordfish, tagged it and released it on the first drop.

Our next swordfish trip Mark wanted to catch a swordfish. He did it in a big way when he caught A 90 inch swordfish the first drop and another fish the same size the next drop. The second was tagged and released.

Of special importance about these three swordfish was the fact that they were all fought IGFA legal, in a harness and hand cranked all the way. Our system is to use a Penn International 80VSW with a Hooker Electric drive as a down rigger, and a Penn International 70 VSW as our fishing rod. Both reels are filled with 65 pound ProSpec braid.

The downrigger rod has a 8 foot 300 pound leader at the end. In the middle of the leader is a Diesel release clip secured with a sleeve. The fishing rod has a 150 foot 80 pound mono top shot with a waxed line loop 50 feet from the braid splice. This waxed loop is place in the diesel clip at deployment.

Recently, we have had great fishing on the edge. We fished disabled American Veterans on Veterans Day. They caught a cobia, a 17 pound mutton snapper, several mahi, Spanish mackerel, kingfish, a black grouper and a sailfish. 2 days later we fished with Geoff in the Jeb Bush South Florida Sailfish Classic. He caught several mahi , kingfish, bonito and a sailfish.

And now the wind is blowing. When it ends we look forward to plenty of Spanish mackerel, sailfish, mahi and black grouper.
